It’s the First Monday in May! Famously referred to as “fashion’s biggest night out,” this year’s Met Gala is the only day every fashion key player has been waiting for all year long. This year, the Met Gala will be held on May 6th 2024 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in the heart of New York City. You might be wondering, what is a Met Gala? Met Gala is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Museum of the Metropolitan of Art’s fashion division, the Costume Institute. Over 33,000 objects are stored and preserved at the Costume Institute representing seven centuries of fashionable archival pieces dated from the fifteenth century to the present. The themed exhibition is held annually usually until September every year following the Met Gala event and will be available to visit a day after the gala. Met Gala event is held and initiated by Chair Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine and joined by a number of co-chairs that rotate yearly. This year’s co-chairs are Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Chris Hemsworth and Bad Bunny.
The 2024 Met Gala theme is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.” The dress code “The Garden of Time” is heavily inspired by a short story of the same title by author J.G Ballard in 1962. The story tells us about Count Axel and his wife, Countess in their utopia of leisure, art, beauty, living in a divine villa with a terrace that overlooks an enchanting garden of flowers, crystals, everything blooming beautifully. Hence, you will expect to see a lot of flowers, leaves, stems, nature, everything soft and pretty on the Met red carpet. This year’s theme will bring out over 250 objects from the museum’s collection and the exhibition will run through until Fall 2024 and will be open to the public on the 7th of May 2024.
All the A-list Hollywood celebrities, artists, fashion designers, stylists, actors and actresses will gather at the museum beginning with a red carpet moment and walk through the famous Met stairs to get into the museum. As you may have seen, Anna Wintour arrived in a Loewe wool tuxedo, decorated with floral motifs, feathers, beads and pearl embellishment, paired with a long sleeve dress in bias-cut silk satin. Co-chair Zendaya, wearing archival piece from Maison Margiela by John Galliano, a divine iridescent dress using an electric blue organza and metallic material drapes down beautifully to the floor, completed with a silver metal-wire hat and an ankle-strap pumps by Christian Louboutin for Maison Margiela.
